In a show of continued support, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his gratitude to Germany on Friday for a new multibillion-euro aid initiative aimed at bolstering Ukraine's defenses against Russian aggression. This assistance arrives at a crucial time as the conflict persists, highlighting Germany's commitment to aid Ukraine in addressing its urgent needs.
Zelensky's appreciation was specifically directed towards Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Friedrich Merz, who is anticipated to succeed him. Zelensky stated on social media, “Thank you, Germany,” emphasizing the importance of this support for the Ukrainian cause.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha further elaborated on the military enhancements that will be facilitated by this assistance, noting that it will enhance Ukraine’s air defense, artillery, drone capabilities, and armored vehicles, among other vital areas. He conveyed the nation's gratitude, remarking, “We are grateful to Germany for its strategic investment in fair and long-term peace and security in Ukraine and throughout Europe.”
Highlighting the impact of previous military support, Sybiha noted that German weaponry has already contributed to saving countless lives and expressed confidence that this new support would yield even greater benefits in the near future.
The federal budget committee of the Bundestag has granted approval for this aid package, which consists of an immediate allocation of €3 billion (around $3.26 billion) for the current year and a projected €8.3 billion earmarked for the years 2026 to 2029. This financial commitment underscores Germany's ongoing role in supporting Ukraine during these challenging times.
According to Germany's Ministry of Defence, a variety of military supplies, including the Iris-T air defense system, guided missiles, surveillance radars, drones, combat vehicles, and small arms, are scheduled for delivery to Ukraine this year, further solidifying the partnership between the two nations.
Since the onset of the full-scale invasion by Russia, Germany has provided over €44 billion in support to Ukraine, illustrating a robust and sustained effort to aid the nation in its ongoing struggles.
