Tensions between Russia and Germany are rising as the Kremlin reacts to remarks made by Friedrich Merz, Germany's chancellor-in-waiting, regarding potential military support for Ukraine. Merz's comments about possibly supplying Taurus long-range missiles to Kyiv are drawing scrutiny from Moscow, where officials express concern over the implications of such a move. In an interview with German public broadcaster ARD, Merz indicated that he would consider providing Taurus missiles to Ukraine if this action was part of a broader strategy agreed upon with European partners. He stated, "This must be jointly agreed. And if it's agreed, then Germany should take part," emphasizing collaborative support among allies. Germany has played a significant role in supporting Ukraine militarily, having allocated approximately 7.1 billion euros in military aid in 2024 alone, as per government data. However, the German government has not yet delivered Taurus missiles, which are capable of reaching distances over 300 miles (480 km), despite Ukraine's persistent requests for these advanced weapons. Responding to Merz's statements, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov criticized the proposed shift in German policy, interpreting it as an inclination towards a more aggressive stance. Peskov stated that such a position would likely "inevitably lead only to a further escalation of the situation around Ukraine." He lamented what he perceives as a lack of willingness among European nations to pursue diplomatic solutions, instead accusing them of fostering prolonged conflict. The international community continues to watch closely as discussions around military aid to Ukraine unfold, with implications for regional stability and security in Europe.
