U.S. Plans Significant Rare Earths Partnership with Ukraine
In a strategic move to enhance the production of critical minerals, former President Donald Trump announced plans to finalize a rare earths deal with Ukraine. This announcement comes on the heels of an executive order aimed at boosting domestic production and reducing dependence on foreign supplies, particularly from China.
Speaking from Washington, D.C., Trump remarked, “Moments ago, I also signed an executive order to dramatically increase production of critical minerals and rare earths. It’s a big thing in this country. And as you know, we’re also signing agreements in various locations to unlock rare earths and minerals and lots of other things all over the world, but in particular, Ukraine.” He highlighted the significant value of the rare earth resources available in Ukraine, indicating a strong commitment to this partnership.
In addition to the announcement regarding Ukraine, Trump addressed broader efforts to ramp up the United States' capabilities in critical minerals production. The details surrounding the executive order were not disclosed by the White House immediately. However, previous reports suggested that the plan could involve establishing metal refining facilities on military bases, leveraging national security measures to enhance production levels.
As countries like China currently dominate the rare earths market, the U.S. government appears to be actively seeking ways to strengthen its position in this critical sector, which is essential for a variety of high-tech applications and sustainability initiatives.
