In a significant decision amid ongoing conflict, Ukraine has confirmed the extension of martial law and the mobilization order for an additional 90 days. This extension will last until early August, designed to counter the ongoing threats following the large-scale Russian invasion that commenced over three years ago.
The motions put forth by President Volodymyr Zelensky achieved the necessary two-thirds support in the Ukrainian parliament, according to local media sources. Once President Zelensky formalizes the extension, martial law will now extend until August 6, having initially been set to expire on May 9.
Criticism has arisen regarding the swift passage of this extension. Former president Petro Poroshenko voiced concerns that the government acted prematurely with nearly a month still remaining before the existing martial law was set to conclude. He labeled the current use of martial law as detrimental, suggesting it is being utilized to not only protect the nation but also to further an authoritarian agenda.
Martial law first took effect in Ukraine following Russia's large-scale military action on February 24, 2022. The current state of affairs has led to the suspension of both presidential and parliamentary elections, in addition to restrictions on conscription, preventing men aged 18 to 60 from leaving the country.
